Artificial Grass Rebates are coming to Utah!
State Allocates $5 Million to Support Waterwise Landscaping
The Utah legislature has granted the Division of Water Resources five million dollars to use in a statewide grass removal rebate program. This exciting new program encourages people to switch to waterwise landscaping. Now Utah homeowners will be able to offset the cost of installing artificial turf!
The full statewide program will launch through utahwatersavers.com in spring 2023.
The Division of Water Resources is working with Central Utah, Jordan Valley, Washington County and Weber Basin Water Conservancy Districts to develop program standards for what will be considered “waterwise landscaping.” Communities will work with their districts to adopt standards that qualify for the statewide program.
This program also comes with water conscious rules for new developments. At the very least, this new program will require that park strips in new developments will not have natural grass landscaping. The program will also stipulate that grass lawn areas will exceed no more than half of the total landscaped area for front and side yards.
Eligible participants can receive up to $3 per square foot of lawn replaced with waterwise landscaping. Rebate amount varies by location. Once your application has been approved, you have up to one year to complete your landscaping project.
Why Now?
Droughts are creating problems for the people of Utah, the effects of which can already be seen.
Today the Great Salt Lake takes up roughly 950 square miles, less than a third of its former size in 1987! Ecologists warn of a possible environmental and economic disaster should the Great Salt Lake dry up. The lake bed contains a relatively large amount of arsenic, mercury, and lead which could create poisonous dust clouds should the lake dry up completely.
“The prognosis isn’t good unless there’s massive action. But we have to start within one year, we have to take action now,” says Salt Lake City mayor Erin Mendenhall.
By switching to artificial turf and other forms of drought friendly water, Utah residents can virtually eliminate the need for residential landscape irrigation. “Nationwide, landscape irrigation is estimated to account for nearly one-third of all residential water use, totaling nearly 9 billion gallons per day,” says the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Government Allocates $2 Million to Replace Grass in Clark County
The federal government allocates $140 million to conserve 77 billion gallons of water — offering exciting opportunities for Nevada-based turf retailers and installers!
The Department of the Interior is funding 84 water projects in 15 states in the hopes of conserving roughly 230,000 acre-feet of water. This investment aims to boost drought resiliency across the West by funding local initiatives to cut water waste.
“The projects we are funding today are locally led and will support increased water conservation through innovative efficiency measures,” said Deputy Secretary Tommy Beaudreau.
The funding will be provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law over the next five years. Projects include updating canal lining, providing better water meters, and replacing natural grass with artificial turf.
What This Means for Vegas Residents
In Vegas Valley, the federal government is paying $2 million to convert 22 grass fields to artificial turf at 11 high schools across the Clark County School District. The Southern Nevada Water Authority expects to save over 109 million gallons of water by switching these fields to sports turf.
This new funding will supplement CCSD’s existing plans to spend $290+ million installing 9 million square feet of artificial turf — a massive undertaking that will save Nevada an estimated 500 million gallons of water each year!
“The primary focus of the turf conversion projects will be on athletic fields at CCSD high school campuses. The school district expects all high school sports fields to be converted to artificial turf within 7 years. CCSD is still in the planning phase for the projects and will award the projects through the regular bidding process,” said a spokesperson for CCSD.
